Women Write to Question Injustice, Voice the Marginalised: Writers at Feminist Literature Meet

Pune, Oct 25 (UNI) Seven women writers shared their motivations for writing, highlighting the need to question injustice, document the lives of marginalised communities, challenge misconceptions about feminism and bring neglected social realities into public discourse at a special session titled ‘Why Do I Write?’ at a feminist literature conference in Pune.
The session was held at Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha in Karvenagar as part of the Nandi Sammelan associated with the 100th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan.
The participating writers were Dr Geetali V. M., Dr Aditi Kalmegh, Shilpa Kamble, Amruta Khanderao, Dr Pratibha Jadhav, Dr Vinaya Jangle and Heena Kausar Khan.
Conference chairperson Dr Neelam Gorhe said women's writing documented not only their personal experiences but also realities often overlooked by society. When women from rural, working-class, Bahujan and other marginalised backgrounds wrote about their lives, they brought neglected experiences into literature.
She emphasised the need to create an environment wherein women could express themselves fearlessly and said emerging women writers should receive opportunities to publish their work and reach readers. Women's writing, she said, should help change social attitudes and encourage action towards equality.
Dr Geetali V. M. said feminism was not an anti-male ideology but was rooted in democracy, tolerance, diversity, non-violence and humanity. Its objective was to challenge structures that perpetuated inequality and enable people across genders and sexual identities to live with dignity.
She said women who questioned injustice were often accused of attempting to break families. However, opposing injustice did not mean opposing the family. She wrote to dispel misconceptions about feminism, communicate its fundamental principles and encourage open dialogue. She also stressed the need for greater participation of women in politics to advance equality.
Dr Aditi Kalmegh said the struggles of women she encountered while practising medicine in rural areas had become a major source of inspiration for her writing. Despite difficult circumstances, rural women demonstrated resilience and continued to live with hope, she said.
She observed that education and financial independence alone did not necessarily ensure self-awareness and self-respect among urban women. The tendency to define oneself through society's perceptions, particularly by equating beauty with self-worth, was a matter of concern.
Her poems, stories and articles emerged from a combination of experience, observation and reflection. She said speaking out against wrongdoing was also a citizen's responsibility.
Shilpa Kamble said she wrote because she could not tolerate injustice. She explained that the experiences of Bahujan women were inadequately represented in the literature she had read, prompting her to write the novel 'Nilaya Dolyanchi Mulgi'.
Writing had also helped her cope with difficult circumstances and find strength, she said. Kamble added that her work on a television series about Dr B. R. Ambedkar had enabled her to take his thoughts to a wider audience. She had explored television, theatre and cinema alongside books to reach more people with her stories.
Amruta Khanderao from Yavatmal said she wrote to portray the lives and struggles of rural women in their own language. While writing on Vidarbha's food culture and women's lifestyles on social media, she encountered scepticism, criticism and trolling from some urban readers.
These experiences strengthened her resolve to present rural realities more assertively, she said. UNI SP CDS
