BJP leader Kirit Somaiya writes to BMC for strict action against open Bakrid sacrifices

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Mumbai BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has written to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding strict guidelines and action to prevent the sacrifice of goats in open and residential areas on the occasion of Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha.
Tweeting a soft copy of his letter to the BJP-controlled BMC here on Thursday, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya stated that he had informed the BMC about how goats and other animals are illegally sacrificed in open spaces on Bakrid in many places.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that on the occasion of Bakrid, some people from the Muslim community deliberately sacrifice animals in open places in order to “intimidate Hindus”.
The BMC and the police should take strict action against such activities, the BJP leader stated in his letter.
The Municipal Corporation should launch a public awareness campaign involving religious leaders and prominent personalities from the Muslim community to convey the message that sacrificial rituals in open spaces are not permissible during Bakrid.
“We do not accept this kind of pollution, whether it is in the name of Bakrid or religious rituals. The BMC should review its existing rules related to this matter, make stricter rules and ensure that they are strictly followed,” Sonaiya stated.
Somaaiya claimed that such open air sacrificial rituals take place in residential societies, chawls, open fields, public squares as well as streets, though his letter has not cited any specific instances.
Sonaiya claimed in his letter to the BMC that sacrificial rituals are openly conducted particularly in areas like Shivajinagar, Govandi, Mankhurd, Kurla, Malvani, Byculla, Bhendi Bazaar, Vikhroli Park, Ghatkopar (West), Mumbadevi area and Goldeval area.
Somaiya mentioned in his letter that BJP-controlled municipal officials regularly act illegally and irresponsibly by citing a few BMC circulars.
Stating that no open air sacrificial rituals are permitted within residential housing societies or chawls, the BJP leader mentioned that if Muslims wish to perform religious sacrificial rituals, the BMC should make arrangements for enclosed stalls.
Somiaya stated that if arrangements for sacrificial rituals have to be made in an open space, care should be taken to ensure there is no opposition from local residents.
