BJP spokesperson seeks halt to screening of documentary on Umar Khalid in Nashik

Mumbai, Sep 25 (UNI) Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Ajit Chavan has urged the Nashik Police Commissioner to immediately stop the proposed screening of a documentary on Umar Khalid, alleging that it glorifies a person accused in a case related to anti-national activities.
Chavan said some organisations were planning to screen the documentary in Nashik, which is currently witnessing religious activities associated with the Kumbh.
He alleged that the documentary portrays Khalid, whom he accused of having an "anti-India mindset", in a favourable manner.
"We have demanded that the Nashik Police Commissioner immediately stop the screening,” Chavan said.
He also criticised the organisations supporting the screening, alleging that they were attempting to portray Khalid as a hero.
Chavan said such organisations and their alleged ideology should be strongly opposed.
"We will not allow this screening to take place. We are prepared for a struggle on the streets, but we will not allow organisations promoting what we consider an anti-national mindset to hold the screening," he said.
Notably, the documentary on jailed student activist Umar Khalid is titled 'Prisoner No. 626710 is Present'. The 60-minute uncertified film follows Khalid's background as a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar and his ongoing incarceration. He was arrested in September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy case behind the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.
