Cong backs protests over Election Commission, MPSC issues: Harshvardhan Sapkal

Mumbai, Oct 2 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshvardhan Sapkal on Friday said the party would support those raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the historic Mani Bhavan in Mumbai along with Congress in-charge Dr Sirivella Prasad on Gandhi Jayanti, Sapkal alleged that the election system had been compromised and said the agitation would continue until those responsible for the alleged irregularities stepped down.
Sapkal said the Election Commission should clarify the changes made to Form 6 and the reported decision to entrust certain election-related functions to a private company.
On the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), Sapkal extended Congress support to the ongoing students' agitation and demanded accountability over the commission's functioning.
He said the MPSC chairman should resign and that the concerns raised by students should be addressed.
Referring to his visit to Mani Bhavan, Sapkal said the occasion should be used to carry forward the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and the Constitution rather than remembering Gandhi only on his birth and death anniversaries.
He also criticised the Centre over inflation, alleging that the government had failed to adequately address the burden on ordinary consumers. UNI SP SAS
