Rs 5,000 farmer aid inadequate, says Tatkare; Bhondekar seeks higher relief

Mumbai, Oct 16 ( UNI) The Maharashtra government’s decision to provide an initial assistance of Rs 5,000 to farmers affected by crop losses has drawn criticism from within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, with leaders questioning whether the amount would provide adequate relief ahead of Diwali.
Nationalist Congress Party leader Sunil Tatkare has expressed dissatisfaction with the amount, describing the assistance as inadequate. Responding to the criticism, state Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the decision to provide rupees 5,000 was taken in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar.
Shiv Sena MLA Narendra Bhondekar has demanded that the government increase the initial assistance to ₹10,000–₹15,000 per affected farmer, arguing that greater financial support is needed to address crop losses.
Minister Sanjay Shirsat has also questioned the adequacy of the assistance, observing that 5,000 would not be sufficient for farmers to celebrate Diwali.
The differing views expressed by Mahayuti leaders have brought the adequacy of the government's relief measures into focus. While Bawankule has defended the decision, the demands for a higher initial payment reflect concerns within the ruling alliance over the financial difficulties faced by farmers affected by crop losses.
