Kolhapur: 25th Sugarcane Convention to be held Oct 10, says Raju Shetty; Announces dharna in front of union Minister's house

Kolhapur, Sep 15 (UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) national president and former MP Raju Shetty today announced that the historic 25th sugarcane convention (Uas Parishad) will be held on Octobar 10 to fix the Fair and Remunerative Price of sugarcane for the crushing season. He also announced that a dharna will he held in front of union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Pralhad Joshi's residence in Hubli on Sep 29.
On the directives of the Central Government, the State Government has decided to start the sugarcane crushing season from October 15 this year. However, this decision of the Government is unilateral and will cause huge losses to the sugar industry, manufacturers and mainly sugarcane farmers, Shetty said.
Shetty, while addressing SSS workers and office bearers at the goverment rest house here this evening, said the 25th Sugarcane Convention will be held on Octobar 10 at Vikramsing ground in Jaysingpur town in Hatkanangale tehsil of this district, to fix the first installment of FRP (Fair and Remunerative Price) of sugarcane per tone in the coming crushing season.
Shetty also announced that a dharna agitation will be staged in front of union Minister Pralhad Joshi's residence in Hubli on September 29 to put pressure on the central government regarding the Minimum Support Price for sugar and the price of ethanol.
Immature sugarcane will reduce the sugar recovery by 1.20 to 1.50 percent in the current crushing season. On average, 100 to 120 million tonnes of sugarcane is crushed in Maharashtra. If the recovery decreases, the total sugar production in the state may decrease by approximately 1.2 to 1.8 million tonnes, Shetty said.
Also, due to the lack of return rains, there is possibility of another 15 to 20 percent decrease in production, reducing the total production by 2.5 to 3.5 million tonnes. Since this year's recovery is determined by the FRP for next year, farmers will lose an average of Rs 500 to 550 per tonne of sugarcane crushed next year.
Due to the ban on making ethanol from B-heavy and syrup by the central government, farmers and cooperative sugar factories are directly affected by interest of crores of rupees.
The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana has written to the Chief Minister today demanding that the Minimum Support Price of sugar be fixed at Rs 50 per kg and the selling price of ethanol at Rs 70 per liter.
He demanded that the central and state governments should provide a subsidy of Rs 500 per tonne to sugarcane growers to compensate for the losses incurred by farmers due to reduced recovery.
To reduce the burden of interest on loans for ethanol projects, a one-year interest subsidy and installment extension scheme should be announced. To stabilize the sugar industry, loans should be provided to private and cooperative sugar factories at an annual interest rate of 4 percent under NABARD, SDF Fund or NCDC and others, Shetty demanded.
