UN Security Council condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, demands end to escalation

New York, Sep 19 (UNI) The UN Security Council on Saturday condemned "in the strongest terms" continued attacks by the Houthi militia on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on civilians and energy infrastructure, and demanded that the group "immediately cease their military escalation."
The world body affirmed Saudi Arabia's inherent right to self-defense under international law and expressed solidarity with the kingdom.
Members also reiterated their earlier condemnation of Houthi attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
In a statement, the UNSC demanded that the Houthis “immediately cease their military escalation”.
They stressed the need to ensure the safety of ships and crews and to respect freedom of navigation and maritime rights under international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The council urged the Houthis to halt attacks affecting civilians and emphasized the importance of fully implementing Security Council Resolution 2216 of 2015 and subsequent relevant resolutions. It also reaffirmed its commitment to Yemen's unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.UNI AAB
