Chandigarh/New Delhi, May 21 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of the arrest of Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mehmoodabad and sent a notice to the Haryana DGP returnable within a week.
In a statement, the Commission noted that a media report, which contains a gist of the allegations on the basis of which the professor has been arrested, discloses, prima facie, that the human rights and liberty of the person have been violated.
"Therefore, it has deemed it to be a fit case for taking suo motu cognizance of the reported incident," it said the commission.
Professor Ali Khan was arrested on Sunday after two FIRs were filed against him on the basis of complaints by a sarpanch and Haryana Women Commission Chief Renu Bhatia over a social media post about Operation Sindoor by the professor.
Students as well as faculty of the University and civil society members have supported the professor.
