Odisha announces student union polls after eight-year gap

Bhubaneswar, Oct 5 (UNI) Student union elections in colleges and universities under Odisha’s Higher Education Department will be held on October 15, ending an eight-year hiatus, officials said on Monday.
Institutions will issue election notifications on October 7. Students can file nominations on October 9, with scrutiny scheduled for the same day. The final list of candidates will be published on October 10 after the withdrawal deadline.
The “Why I Stand For” meeting will be held on October 14, followed by polling, counting and declaration of results on October 15. Newly elected union members will take the oath on October 16.
Student union elections have not been held in the state since 2018. Student organisations had opposed the prolonged suspension, arguing that it infringed on students’ rights. After coming to power in 2024, the BJP government had assured student groups that elections would be restored.
