Odisha journalists take to streets, demand protection of professional rights

Bhubaneswar, Oct 12 (UNI) Journalists from across Mayurbhanj district today submitted a memorandum to the administration, demanding professional security, welfare measures and protection of their legitimate rights, following concerns over alleged administrative neglect and attacks on media professionals.
The journalists staged a mass sit-in outside the District Collector’s Office here before handing over the memorandum to Additional District Magistrate Ishwar Chandra Nayak.
Organised by the Mayurbhanj District Journalists’ Joint Forum, the protest brought together members of seven media organisations representing the district’s four subdivisions and 26 blocks.
Coordinated by Odisha Journalists union (OJU) State Vice-President Deepak Kumar Nayak, the demonstration highlighted concerns over the safety, dignity and welfare of journalists.
Speakers stressed that journalists play a vital role in upholding democracy and highlighting public grievances but alleged that their professional security and dignity were increasingly under threat.

The speakers urged journalists to rise above organisational differences and unite to safeguard their professional interests. They warned that continued neglect and attacks on media professionals could force them to intensify their democratic movement.
The participating organisations included OJU, Utkal Journalists Union, State union of Journalists, Kalinga Professional Journalists Association, Mayurbhanj District Journalists Association, Mayurbhanj District Working Journalists’ Family and Odisha Digital Media Mahasangh.
The forum resolved to strengthen unity among journalists and continue its efforts to secure their dignity, welfare and safety. UNI MK SS
