Odisha maintains close vigil as Deep Depression moves inland: Revenue Minister

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24 (UNI) Odisha continued to maintain close vigil over the movement of the Deep Depression after the weather system crossed the coast and moved inland, with special focus on southern and western districts, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said on Thursday.
The Deep Depression is likely to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken into a Depression by this evening, Mr Pujari said, adding that it is expected to continue moving in the same direction during the subsequent 24 hours and weaken further.
The Minister said that with the system having crossed the coast and moving inland, the State Government was maintaining constant watch over the evolving weather situation and its possible localised impact.
A Red Warning has been issued for Nabarangpur district for Thursday, while an Orange Warning is in force for Koraput, Malkangiri, Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir and Kalahandi districts.
The district administrations are closely monitoring rainfall conditions, river and water levels and other vulnerable locations, while response teams deployed at the field level remain on alert.
During the next 12 hours, the system is likely to initially move northwestwards while maintaining its intensity. It is thereafter expected to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken.
Preventive measures, including night patrolling in vulnerable areas, traffic management, monitoring of water levels and restoration arrangements, are continuing in the affected districts. Field-level assessments are also being carried out regularly to identify and respond to emerging situations.
According to reports received from the districts, no major damage has been reported on a widespread scale so far.
Mr Pujari said the Deep Depression over north coastal Andhra Pradesh had moved northwestwards at a speed of 7 kmph during the past six hours.
At 0830 hours on September 24, the system was centred over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha, near latitude 18.5°N and longitude 83.5°E.
It lay about 70 km west-northwest of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 80 km south-southeast of Rayagada in Odisha, 90 km east-southeast of Koraput and 170 km east-southeast of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.
The weather system has brought significant rainfall to several parts of Odisha, with more than 100 mm recorded in several blocks on Thursday.
Similiguda in Koraput recorded the highest rainfall of 193.9 mm, followed by Chitrakonda in Malkangiri with 168.8 mm, Tangi in Khordha with 142.0 mm, Badamba in Cuttack with 134.0 mm, G. Udayagiri in Kandhamal with 125.4 mm, Paralakhemundi in Gajapati with 121.4 mm and Gosani in Gajapati with 120.0 mm.
Although the Deep Depression has crossed the coast, weather warnings remain in force for several districts and precautionary measures are being continued based on local conditions.
These measures include night patrolling in vulnerable areas, monitoring of rivers and water levels, diversion of traffic through alternative routes wherever necessary, prompt clearance of uprooted trees, shifting of affected people to safer locations and continuous restoration work.
The situation in the affected districts is being assessed continuously, with field-level agencies directed to take immediate response measures wherever required.
Priority is being given to ensuring public safety and maintaining essential communication and transportation systems, besides promptly addressing any localised impact of the weather system.
As the Deep Depression moves further inland and is expected to weaken gradually, the State Government remains fully prepared to deal with any situation, Mr Pujari said.
The district administrations and response teams continue to closely monitor rainfall, river water levels and vulnerable locations, while necessary response and restoration measures remain underway.
The overall situation in the affected districts is largely under control at present, with no major widespread damage reported so far, he added.
