Tourist couple allegedly assaulted by hotel staff in Puri, police investigate

Puri, Sep 24 (UNI) A tourist couple from Mysore was allegedly assaulted by hotel staff following a dispute over food at a restaurant here on Wednesday night, prompting police to rescue the couple and admit them to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
According to reports, a 13-member tourist group from Mysore had arrived in Puri for sightseeing. On Wednesday evening, a couple, Bharat Chandra and his wife Susmita, 23, went to a nearby restaurant, ‘The Taste of Bengal’, for dinner while visiting the beach.
During the meal, the couple reportedly found a strand of human hair in a dish and complained to the restaurant staff, asking for its replacement.
The restaurant operator allegedly demanded payment for serving a fresh dish, following which an argument broke out between the couple and the restaurant owner.
Susmita alleged that the hotel staff subsequently pulled down the shutter, trapping the couple inside the restaurant, and assaulted them from different sides.
Susmita, who is seven months pregnant, alleged that she was pushed during the altercation and fell against a dining table. The impact caused severe pain in her abdomen, she told mediapersons.
Hearing the commotion, some locals reportedly informed the police. A PCR van reached the spot and rescued the couple before taking them to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the hotel employees lodged a complaint against the tourist couple at Sea Beach police station, alleging that they had been assaulted. The tourist couple initially had not filed a complaint.
Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh said the incident appeared to have occurred due to a lack of communication, with language differences contributing to the altercation.
The SP said the behaviour of both sides during the incident was not appropriate.
Police subsequently registered a criminal case against the tourist couple and detained them. The couple also later lodged a complaint and brought the matter to the notice of the SP.
Police are investigating the incident and examining the circumstances leading to the altercation, the SP said.
