Only one local militant active in Kashmir : IGP

Srinagar, Nov 5(UNI) Inspector General of Police Kashmir Sujit Kumar on Thursday said there is one local militant active in Kashmir who has orchestrated attacks in Anantnag and Kulgam districts this year.
Addressing a press conference, his first since assuming charge as IGP Kashmir, Kumar said the local militant was being supported by a few foreign terrorists.
On the number of foreign militants operating in Kashmir, the IGP said it was difficult to provide an exact figure.
“There are some footprints and indications, but that cannot be a certain number because these terrorists are constantly moving from one point to another. They may be at one location today and somewhere else the following day,” he said.
“We are tracing them. Any fixed figure would be an exaggeration,” Kumar said.
The IGP also said two foreign terrorists were killed in the higher reaches of central Kashmir.
“You must be aware that they were killed in the higher reaches of the area, covering parts of the Poonch and Budgam regions. They were surviving in difficult and transitional terrain,” he said.
However, Kumar said security forces, including specialised units, had established dominance over the higher reaches and mountain heights, culminating in a successful operation.
Responding to a question about the inconvenience faced by people on the National Highway in south Kashmir during the convoy movement of forces, Kumar said security protocols had been framed in view of previous militant incidents and the prevailing threat perception.
“As I mentioned earlier, threats continue to emerge. Explosives and IEDs are being recovered from areas around the National Highway from time to time. All these aspects are taken into consideration while implementing the security protocols. However, this is a sensitive issue,” he said.
He added that the matter would be discussed with senior officers and other security agencies and would remain on the police's radar.
On the fight against drugs, IGP said they have registered more than 1,651 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested approximately 1,941 people. "We have seized around 1,071 kg of contraband and recovered cash amounting to Rs 1.10 crore. This includes the cash seized in the major drug racket busted recently in downtown Srinagar," he said.
He added that so far they have attached properties worth Rs 154 crore under the forfeiture provisions. "We have also frozen 567 bank accounts containing approximately Rs 1.71 crore.
"My message is particularly directed towards those young people who are fighting against drugs. Some may have unfortunately become addicted but now want to overcome their addiction. I appeal to them to come forward. We will protect their identity and help them in this fight," he said.
