Over 500 delegates to attend intl maize conference in Hyderabad from Nov 2

Hyderabad, Nov 1(UNI) More than 500 delegates from India and abroad will participate in the first International Maize Conference 2026 (IMC-2026), beginning here on November 2, to discuss strategies for increasing maize production, strengthening research and promoting its use in food, feed, fodder, fuel and industrial sectors.
The three-day conference will be held at JD Convention Centre, Shamshabad, outskirts of Hyderabad, from November 2 to 4 under the theme 'Maize Revolution for Food, Feed, Fodder, Fuel and Sustainability in the Changing World', said M L Jat, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), at a curtain-raiser press conference held at ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management here on Sunday.
He said India's maize production had increased from less than two million tonnes in 1950-51 to over 55 million tonnes in 2025-26, reflecting the growing importance of the crop in food and nutritional security, livestock feed, industrial applications and renewable energy.
The conference would focus on climate-resilient varieties, advanced breeding technologies, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, mechanisation, smart farming, sustainable production systems and value addition, he said.
The event is being jointly organised by the Maize Technologists Association of India, Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University, ICAR, Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research.
Scientists, policymakers, academicians, industry representatives, development partners, entrepreneurs and farmer organisations are expected to attend.
The programme will feature plenary lectures, technical sessions, panel discussions, poster presentations and policy dialogues. An international Maize Innovation and Industry Exhibition will showcase technologies, machinery, seed innovations, digital agriculture solutions and value-added products.
World Food Prize laureate S K Vasal will also participate in the conference. Publications on India's maize development and the contributions of eminent scientists will be released during the event.
ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research Director Nachiket Kotwaliwale, conference organising chairman, and ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute Director H S Jat, and PJTAU Director of Research Balram Marathi attended the curtain-raiser programme.
