Paradip Port notified as mega port by Centre

Bhubaneswar, Sep 25 (UNI) Paradip Port has been officially notified as a mega port by the Centre, recognising its growing scale and cargo-handling capabilities.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in a notification issued today, declared Paradip, along with Deendayal (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) and Mundra ports, as mega ports under Section 73 of the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
The notification comes amid a series of record-breaking operational achievements by Paradip Port. The port handled a record 156.45 million tonnes (MMT) of cargo in 2025-26, its highest-ever annual throughput and a 4.02 per cent increase over the previous year. It also recorded 7.73 lakh tonnes of cargo handling in a single day on March 29.
Paradip emerged as the second-highest cargo-handling major port in the country in FY26. Its berth productivity reached about 35,100 tonnes per berth-day, nearly double the national average, according to the port authority. Coastal cargo accounted for 65.81 MMT, while POL, steel, coal, container and LPG handling also registered significant growth.
The port has also strengthened its capacity to handle larger vessels. Earlier this month, it successfully berthed its first Capesize vessel with a 16.5-metre draft at Western Dock-1, carrying 1.53 lakh tonnes of coking coal.
The mega-port notification will come into force from the date of its publication in the official Gazette. UNI MK SS
