Pension support helps over 42 lakh women rebuild their lives after losing their husbands in UP

Lucknow, Nov 1(UNI) Uttar Pradesh Government Destitute Women Pension Scheme for Women is playing an important role in supporting women facing financial challenges following the loss of their spouses. Through the scheme, the government has provided regular financial assistance to more than 42 lakh women across the state.

According to official figures up to the second quarter of the financial year 2026-27, each eligible woman receives a monthly pension of Rs 1,000. The initiative aims not only to help women overcome financial difficulties but also to provide them with a foundation for self-respect and a dignified life.
After losing their husbands, women often face the challenge of managing family responsibilities, raising children, and meeting everyday expenses. In such circumstances, the regular pension serves as an important source of financial support. The monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 helps women meet their essential needs. The fact that more than 42 lakh women receive benefits under the scheme reflects the state government's priority for the social security of destitute women.
Since the financial year 2024-25, all beneficiaries of the scheme have been brought under the Aadhaar-based payment system. Under this arrangement, pension amounts are transferred directly to bank accounts linked with Aadhaar.
Officials of the Women Welfare Department have been instructed to ensure that no woman meeting the eligibility criteria is deprived of the scheme's benefits. Accordingly, officials have emphasized identifying eligible women, creating awareness, and ensuring timely processing of applications. To avail the benefits, a woman must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, be above 18 years of age, have lost her husband, and have an annual family income not exceeding Rs 2 lakh.
Under the scheme, eligible women were receiving a monthly pension of Rs 500 in 2016-17. The Yogi Government increased this amount to Rs 1,000 per month from the financial year 2021-22, effectively doubling the pension.
This increase has enabled lakhs of beneficiaries to receive greater financial assistance than before. Amid rising inflation and household expenses, the enhanced pension has provided much-needed relief to women.
