Two Punjab AAP MLAs quit party, accuse Mann govt of failing on key promises

Chandigarh, Nov 1 (UNI) Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a setback on Sunday as two sitting MLAs, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, announced their resignation from the party, accusing the Bhagwant Mann government of failing to fulfil its promises on drugs, employment, development and governance.
The announcement came shortly after AAP released its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 assembly elections, exposing differences within the ruling party as it prepares to seek another term in office.
Jouramajra, a former Punjab minister representing Samana, and Pathanmajra, the legislator from Sanour, addressed a joint press conference and announced their decision to quit AAP's primary membership.
Both leaders criticised the party leadership but stopped short of announcing their next political move.
"I have resigned. I don't have my heart in the party. The situation in Punjab is heartbreaking," Jouramajra said.
He accused the Mann government of failing to control drug trafficking despite making the elimination of drugs a major election promise in 2022.
Jouramajra alleged that drug addiction continued to affect Punjab's youth while the government was registering criminal cases against addicts instead of ensuring their treatment and rehabilitation.
He also questioned the government's performance on employment, education, minimum support prices for farmers and law and order.
Referring to recent controversies involving anti-drug campaigners, Jouramajra criticised the police handling of a dispute over a body in Mansa and alleged that people raising their voices against drugs were facing harassment.
He further accused the government of failing to act on expectations expressed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib regarding stronger legislation against sacrilege.
The former minister alleged that Punjab's ministers lacked the authority to take independent decisions and that important instructions were being issued by the party leadership in Delhi.
He also criticised the government's handling of mining-related issues.
Pathanmajra said leaving the party that had given him an opportunity to become an MLA was a difficult decision, but he could no longer accept its functioning.
He alleged that the party leadership had failed to honour commitments made at Sri Akal Takht Sahib and was ignoring concerns raised by elected representatives.
The Sanour MLA said he had repeatedly raised water-related problems in his constituency, including in the assembly, but alleged that attempts were made to suppress his voice.
Pathanmajra claimed that development works worth Rs 17 crore had been sanctioned for his constituency, but the funds were never released.
He also criticised the state government's borrowing policies, alleging that Punjab was being pushed towards greater financial difficulties.
The legislator said he had repeatedly been assured of an assembly ticket and asked to apologise to the party leadership, but his conscience did not permit him to do so.
Pathanmajra claimed that more leaders could leave AAP in the coming months.
Both legislators said they would consider future political options based on Punjab's interests.
Their resignations come as AAP begins selecting candidates for the 2027 elections. Neither legislator figured in the first list of 40 candidates, although the party has yet to announce its nominees for Samana and Sanour.
There was no immediate response from AAP or the Punjab government to the allegations.
