Pink October: Mankind Pharma stresses early detection and timely breast cancer treatment

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 26 (UNI) Mankind Pharma has called for stronger public awareness of breast cancer, urging people to recognise warning signs, seek medical advice promptly and make informed decisions about screening and treatment as part of its Pink October campaign.
The campaign, organised during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is an extension of the company's '1 Million Lives initiative, which seeks to improve access to health information and encourage proactive healthcare practices.
A lump or thickening in the breast, changes in breast size or shape, skin abnormalities, nipple changes and unusual discharge are potential warning signs that require medical assessment. Although these symptoms do not always indicate cancer, medical consultation can help identify the underlying cause and determine whether further investigation is necessary.
Clinical examinations and mammography, based on age and individual risk factors, play an important role in breast cancer detection. Timely diagnosis also helps doctors assess the disease and identify suitable treatment options.
"Cancer awareness must extend beyond healthcare facilities and become an integral part of how people approach their health,” said Atish Majumdar, Senior President of Mankind Pharma.
He said the company's 1 Million Lives initiative aimed to make reliable health information more accessible and encourage individuals and families to take a proactive approach to their health. The Pink October campaign further underlines the importance of breast health awareness, early detection and timely medical consultation, he added.
Dr Ramadas Kunnambath, Consultant Medical Oncologist at PRS Hospital, Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram, stressed the importance of recognising unusual breast changes and seeking medical attention without delay.
Screening decisions should take into account a person's age and individual risk profile, while patients diagnosed with breast cancer may require additional diagnostic assessments to determine the most appropriate treatment, he said.
He also highlighted the importance of biomarker testing, including HER2 testing where indicated, in guiding treatment decisions. Determining the HER2 status of a tumour helps doctors assess whether targeted therapies may be suitable for a patient.
Launched in June 2026, Mankind Pharma's 1 Million Lives initiative has so far included training for more than 500 health workers. In July, 285 doctors pledged their support for the initiative's goal of helping protect one million families.
Through Pink October, the company aims to expand awareness of preventive oncology and encourage people to prioritise breast health, seek timely medical evaluation and access appropriate care.
