PM paving way for digital trade monopolies through UPI charges: Vishnu Mohan MLA

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 19 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was paving the way for corporate monopolies to exploit people through the country's trading sector in the name of Digital India, Revolutionary Youth Front (RYF) state secretary and MLA Adv. Vishnu Mohan alleged on Saturday.
Commenting on the proposed levy on commercial UPI transactions, Vishnu Mohan said the Centre had initially encouraged people to adopt digital transactions but was now seeking to impose an additional financial burden on them through legislation.
If traders were compelled to pay a new charge or tax on digital transactions, the additional cost would ultimately be passed on to consumers through higher prices, he said.
The MLA alleged that the Centre was attempting to ensure that the benefits of the Digital India initiative accrued primarily to multinational corporations and large corporate monopolies, while small traders and ordinary people were left to bear the additional burden.
He said the government should reconsider the proposed move and ensure that the expansion of digital payments did not become a means of imposing additional costs on traders and consumers.
Meanwhile, the RYF state committee organised a protest march to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office here against the proposed move to levy charges on commercial UPI transactions from October 15.
The protesters demanded withdrawal of the proposed charges and said the move would adversely affect small traders and consumers who increasingly depend on UPI for day-to-day transactions.
The proposed changes relate to charges on certain high-value merchant UPI transactions, while ordinary users are not being directly charged for making UPI payments.
