Priyank Kharge hits back at BJP over father’s Modi remark

Bengaluru, Oct 26 (UNI) Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Monday mounted a strong defence of his father and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the BJP of selective outrage and challenging it to confront its own leaders’ past statements.
Dismissing the BJP’s criticism as an attempt to manufacture controversy, Priyank Kharge argued that his father’s remarks were a retort to a heckler at a public function in Patna, where the Congress president was addressing an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister Krishna Singh.
Responding to a heckler who challenged him over Modi, Mallikarjun Kharge had said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega.”
“BJP likes to make issues out of non-issues,” Priyank Kharge told reporters, insisting that the context of the exchange could not be ignored.
He accused the BJP of adopting double standards by taking offence at the Congress president’s remarks while overlooking statements allegedly made by Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah against former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.
“ These so-called cultured people forget what Mr Modi and Mr Shah have spoken. If you file an FIR or a hundred people come and troll us, nothing is going to change. We don’t need to learn culture from them,” he said.
The minister said the BJP had a problem when opposition leaders responded in the language allegedly used by its own leaders.
“These are things that they have said. If you reply back in their own language, they have a problem,” he said, sharpening the Congress’s counterattack against the BJP over the controversy.
Priyank Kharge also sought to shift the focus to the Election Commission, questioning the whereabouts of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and accusing the BJP of using the controversy to divert attention from questions it was reluctant to answer.
“They want to turn their attention from their favourite person, Gyanesh Kumar. Where is he hiding? That is the problem. They just want some deviation from the current problems that they’re facing. They don’t want to answer questions,” he said.
The Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of misusing the Election Commission through Kumar and raised concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The latest exchange has intensified the political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP, with the controversy over Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks becoming another flashpoint in the parties’ ongoing war of words.
