Punjab man held for Rs 20.85 lakh Australia visa fraud

Yamunanagar, Nov 1 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested a Punjab man for allegedly cheating a woman and her family of Rs 20.85 lakh by promising to arrange an Australian visa, a police official said on Sunday.
The accused, Gurpreet Singh of Khooni Majra in Mohali district, was arrested from Mansa and remanded in police custody for five days. Police recovered Rs 1 lakh from him.
Economic Offences Wing in-charge Manjeet said the case was registered at Sadhaura police station on February 19 following a complaint by Ranjita of Kakrauni village.
According to the complaint, Gurpreet demanded around Rs 30 lakh to arrange an Australian study or tourist visa. The family allegedly paid him Rs 14 lakh in cash on January 10, 2024, and transferred another Rs 6.85 lakh through bank accounts.
Police said the accused failed to arrange the visa for seven months before offering to send the woman to England instead.
When the family sought a refund, he allegedly delayed repayment and threatened them.
"We have recovered Rs 1 lakh from the accused, and further investigation is underway," a police official said.
Police said the case was registered under provisions relating to cheating and immigration laws.
