Chandigarh, Oct 27 (UNI) Punjab Police have arrested seven people and seized 20 kg of heroin and 14 sophisticated pistols after dismantling suspected illegal arms and narcotics supply networks in Amritsar district, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday.
The arrests and seizures were made by Amritsar Rural Police as part of an operation targeting organised criminal networks involved in trafficking weapons and narcotics.
In a post on X, Yadav said preliminary investigations had revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with a foreign-based handler who facilitated illegal arms consignments for distribution among criminal elements in Punjab.
"In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Rural Police busts illegal arms and narcotics supply networks, apprehends 7 accused and recovers 14 sophisticated pistols & kg of Kg heroin," the DGP said.
Investigators suspect that the arrested individuals were part of an organised supply chain connecting overseas handlers with criminal networks operating in the state.
Police have registered First Information Reports (FIRs) at Gharinda and Kathunangal police stations.
The DGP said further investigations were underway to identify other members of the network, trace the sources of the seized weapons and narcotics, and establish their intended destinations.
"Further investigation is underway to uncover the complete network and establish backward and forward linkages," Yadav said.
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the arrested accused, the location of individual recoveries or the countries from which the suspected handlers were operating.
The DGP reiterated that Punjab Police remained committed to dismantling illegal arms, drug trafficking and organised criminal networks to ensure security across the state.
