Swami Prasad Maurya's party could contest 10 seats under INDIA alliance in UP

Lucknow, Oct 27 (UNI) Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, seat-sharing talks between the Congress and Apni Janata Party ( AJP) have intensified as Party President Swami Prasad Maurya had demanded about a dozen seats from the Congress.
Sources here on Tuesday now claim that an agreement is likely on about 10 seats. However, a final decision on seat-sharing has not yet been officially announced.
After meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on October 3 last, Swami Prasad Maurya announced Apni Janata Party's joining the INDIA alliance. He stated that further discussions would be held on how many seats his party would contest.
According to sources, Swami Prasad Maurya wants to field his daughter and former Badaun MP Sanghmitra Maurya on a Congress ticket from Bilsi. However, Sanghmitra has currently denied leaving the BJP and has not announced any plans to contest from Bilsi.
The biggest issue between the Congress and Swami Prasad Maurya concerns not only the election symbol but also the seat allocation. Maurya has been demanding seats for his party and candidates on his own symbol, while the Congress has reportedly proposed fielding him on its symbol.
In such a situation, if an agreement is reached on seats and candidates, the role of the Maurya family in the 2027 elections could also emerge, creating new political dynamics.
