Punjab Police Head Constable held with 25 kg heroin in NCB-BSF operation

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Oct 18 (UNI) A Punjab Police head constable posted on VVIP security duty has been arrested in a joint operation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Border Security Force (BSF), with the recovery of another 10 kg of heroin taking the total seizure to 25 kg, valued at an estimated Rs 50 crore, officials said.
The accused, identified as Karanbir Singh, was initially intercepted near Lahian village along the India-Pakistan border while driving a car carrying 15 kg of heroin. Subsequent interrogation led investigators to another consignment of 10 kg concealed near a tower in Bhuse village, which was recovered on Saturday.
Officials said the initial operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs by the NCB and BSF personnel near the international border.
During a search of the vehicle, the joint team recovered three packets containing 15 kg of heroin, a revolver, five live cartridges, Rs 7,000 in cash, two mobile phones, five identity cards, an ATM card, a dongle and a charger.
Investigators suspect that the narcotics may have been smuggled from Pakistan using drones, a method increasingly associated with cross-border drug trafficking along the Punjab frontier. However, the suspected drone link has yet to be conclusively established.
The arrest of a serving police head constable has also prompted scrutiny of his suspected links with drug trafficking networks and whether other individuals, including police personnel, were involved.
Officials said the seized narcotics and other articles had been taken into NCB custody for further investigation.
The agencies are examining the source of the consignments, their intended recipients and the suspected cross-border supply chain.
Further details, including the precise role of the accused in the alleged trafficking network, are awaited from senior investigating officials.
