Punjab police take away man's body, drag protesters into vehicles as tensions flare in Mansa

Chandigarh, Oct 28 (UNI) Tension gripped Punjab's Mansa district after police forcibly took custody of a 35-year-old man's body and dragged several protesters into vehicles during clashes with villagers demanding justice, triggering allegations of police high-handedness and a political backlash against the Aam Aadmi Party government.
The confrontation erupted on Tuesday when relatives and supporters of Daljit Singh, whose family suspects he died of a drug overdose, attempted to take his body to an ongoing protest seeking justice for slain anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota.
Police blocked the procession at Ramdittewala Chowk by positioning trucks and other vehicles across the road. Scuffles followed as officers moved in to disperse the protesters and take possession of the body.
Videos from the confrontation showed police personnel dragging protesters away and forcing them into vehicles. Several people, including women, were detained.
Daljit, a resident of Bhamme Kalan village and father of two children, was found dead near Ramanandi village on Tuesday. His family alleged that he had died after consuming drugs and demanded the arrest of those supplying narcotics in the area.
His wife, Paramjit Kaur, accused the police of pressuring family members over the post-mortem examination and disputed their handling of the body.
"They are now portraying it as murder," a family member said, alleging that police had taken Daljit's father away and pressured relatives to sign documents.
Daljit's sister also questioned the police investigation, alleging that family members had been separated and expressing concern that their father could be pressured into making a statement.
"If the police believe it was a murder, is this how they conduct an investigation — by hiding the body, fleeing with it and taking family members to separate police stations?" she asked.
Daljit's mother, Chand Kaur, demanded action against alleged drug suppliers, blaming the continuing availability of narcotics for the suffering of families.
Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Chaudhary rejected the family's overdose claim, saying preliminary investigations suggested murder.
"Four people travelling in a white Swift car dumped the body by the roadside and fled," Chaudhary said, adding that three suspects had been detained.
He said the precise cause of death would be established through a post-mortem examination.
The SSP defended the police intervention, alleging that some protesters had attempted to disturb law and order and had attacked police personnel.
"Peaceful protest is the public's right, but strict action will be taken against anyone violating the law," he said.
Police said the body had been shifted to AIIMS Bathinda and that the family would conduct the last rites.
The confrontation also led to the detention of activist Lakha Sidhana, while reports of restrictions on farmers travelling towards Mansa added to the unrest.
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia condemned the police action and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Mansa SSP.
"This assault on human dignity and Sikh religious sentiments is unacceptable," Majithia said.
Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa also questioned the government's handling of the incident.
"How many more families must suffer before Bhagwant Mann takes responsibility?" Bajwa asked.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu described the police action as inhuman and accused the state government of suppressing voices demanding justice.
The latest confrontation has intensified tensions in Mansa, where protesters have been demanding justice for Jhota, who was shot dead on October 13.
Farmer organisations have announced demonstrations against the police action, while security has been tightened around protest sites and key roads.
The circumstances surrounding Daljit's death remain under investigation, with his family maintaining that drugs caused his death and police pursuing a suspected murder case.
