Rama Rajya unique to India as it was not based on military conquests: BJP leader K. Surendran

Kochi, Sep 21 (UNI) The concept of 'Rama Rajya' was unique to India as the country's historical achievements were built not on military conquests but on intellectual, spiritual and cultural contributions, BJP national secretary K Surendran has said.
Addressing the concluding session of the three-day Janmabhumi Ramakatha National Conclave here, Surendran said the Ramayana had been a major source of inspiration for India's intellectual, spiritual and cultural heritage.
"Rama Rajya was unique to India. India's historical achievements were not based on military conquests but on its intellectual, spiritual and cultural contributions," he said.
Describing Lord Rama, revered as 'Maryada Purushottama', as an exemplary ruler, Surendran said the ideals associated with Rama had continued to influence political thought and India's understanding of governance.
He said the Janmabhumi newspaper had launched the second phase of its Ramayana campaign, with a particular focus on the younger generation and researchers.
Surendran said Janmabhumi had played a significant role in promoting the spiritual and cultural traditions associated with the Ramayana in Kerala.
Recalling the efforts of Bharatiya Vichara Kendram Director late P Parameswaran and others several decades ago to popularise the reading of the Ramayana during the month of Karkidakam, he said the initiative had initially faced considerable opposition but eventually became widely accepted among households across Kerala.
"The three-day Ramakatha Conclave marks the next phase of this initiative," Surendran said, adding that the campaign would now seek to engage more actively with young people and researchers.
He described the Ramayana as more than a religious text, saying it offered a window into India's past, a perspective for understanding the present and a vision for the future. The epic continued to inspire people pursuing knowledge in different fields, he added.
The Janmabhumi Ramakatha National Conclave, titled "One Epic, Many Stories – Ram Katha Across Bharat and Beyond", was held at Bhaskareeyam in Kochi from September 18 to 20.
The three-day conclave brought together scholars, academicians, researchers, students and cultural practitioners. As many as 144 research papers were presented during the event, according to the organisers.
