RCB stampede: Karnataka HC appoints senior advocate as Amicus Curie

Bengaluru, June 23 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court on Monday appointed Senior Advocate S Susheela as amicus curiae in the suo motu proceedings taken up in connection with the June 4 stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives and injured 56 others.
A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice CM Joshi directed that sealed status reports and all related documents be handed over to the amicus. The court further requested her assistance in deciding whether the state’s report should remain confidential, be made public, or shared selectively with involved parties. The next hearing is scheduled for July 1.
Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the state, submitted that the report contains sensitive preliminary findings that may impact ongoing magisterial and judicial inquiries. He urged that the reports remain sealed for now. However, several intervenors have sought the documents be made public, arguing that transparency is essential for accountability.
The court also took note of requests for enhanced compensation to the victims' families. Senior Advocate SS Naganand urged the court to observe that voluntary compensatory commitments be honoured.
The bench refrained from passing any direction on the matter but said concerned parties may take appropriate steps.
The stampede occurred when over five lakh people thronged the stadium for an event celebrating Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title, far exceeding the stadium’s 33,000 capacity. The incident led to a blame game between the organisers and the State government.
A criminal case has been filed against RCB officials, the event organiser DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Arrests were made, including senior officials of DNA and one associate, who were later granted interim bail. The High Court has now directed the police not to arrest RCB or DNA representatives until further orders.
The Court has impleaded RCB, KSCA, and DNA as parties in the suo motu case and directed them to file their responses ahead of the next hearing. UNI BDN SSP
