Reform anti-defection law to prevent political defections: CPI

Hyderabad, Sep 20 (UNI) CPI National Control Commission Chairman Dr K Narayana on Sunday called for comprehensive reforms to the anti-defection law to prevent elected representatives from changing political allegiance and undermining the mandate of voters.
In a statement, he said continuing political defections were a result of serious loopholes in the existing law.
He questioned why disqualification could not be made automatic when an elected representative violated anti-defection provisions and changed political allegiance, instead of allowing prolonged uncertainty.
Dr Narayana said the Election Commission already maintained records of the political parties from which candidates contested elections and questioned why this information could not be used to strengthen the disqualification process.
He held both the Congress and BJP responsible for failing to address the loopholes and questioned why the present BJP government had not introduced effective legal reforms to curb defections and protect the voters' mandate. UNI VV SAS
