Ruhullah Mehdi to quit NC and Lok Sabha on Nov 3

Srinagar, Oct 30 (UNI) Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Ruhullah Mehdi has announced that he will resign from the National Conference (NC) and surrender his Lok Sabha seat on November 3, accusing the party leadership of betraying the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The three-time NC legislator from Budgam in Central Kashmir has chosen November 3, the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, who was killed in an IED blast, to make the announcement. Mehdi is scheduled to address a public gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on the day, where he is expected to announce his decision.
His likely resignation comes at a time when the ruling NC is facing internal resentment following a recent cabinet reshuffle. A group of party legislators met in Srinagar on Friday, triggering speculation about growing discontent within the party.
In a statement posted on X by Srinagar MP’s office on Friday, Mehdi accused the NC leadership of betraying the people. The statement said the “crown prince and his cabal” treat J&K as a family estate. It said they expect people to vote and then “know their place.”
“They take us for fools who cannot tell a broken promise from a political necessity. Ask them to honour their own manifesto, and they lecture us on how little we understand realpolitik,” the post said.
“We demanded the restoration of Article 370, the release of prisoners and the protection of our rights. They sought power on those promises, then treated us as fools for expecting them to deliver,” MP Ruhullah said.
“We refuse to lend our name to this humiliation,” the statement said. “There is no fixing this rot from within.” It added that the seat was won on a promise to the people and that Mehdi would surrender it rather than become an accomplice to the betrayal of that promise.
Over the last two years, Ruhullah has been publicly criticising the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the government for abandoning the party's ideology and its commitment to fight for the restoration of Article 370.
There is a possibility that Ruhullah may fight the by-election from the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.
