Series of petrol-bomb attacks rock Shillong

Shillong, Sep 17 (UNI) A series of 'petrol-bomb' (Molotov cocktail) attacks, targeting police stations and government offices, damaging vehicles, were reported from different parts of Meghalaya state capital Shillong since Wednesday, with the police on the lookout for the miscreants.

In a pre-dawn attack at 3.15 am on Thursday, a vehicle parked in the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) complex at Laitumkhrah caught fire. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames.

In another incident in the early hours of Thursday, a police booth at Nongmynsong, located on the road towards BSF Meghalaya Frontier headquarters, was reportedly set on fire, while a petrol bomb was hurled at Lumdiengjri police station.
The petrol bomb struck the rear of the OC's room at the Lumdiengjri Police Station, causing minor damage to the window glass.

The latest incidents were reported hours after petrol bombs were hurled at the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) at Risa Colony on Wednesday. A private vehicle parked on the office premises was partially damaged in the attack.

Reacting to the attacks, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, said on Thursday that the police have taken all necessary steps to identify the attackers and establish their motives.

"Throwing petrol bombs or setting things on fire will not solve anything. If they have any grievances with the government, they should come forward and raise their problems across the table," Tynsong told UNI.
The Deputy Chief Minister warned that the government would not spare anyone involved in such violence, and perpetrators would be prosecuted as per the law.

''We are investigating all the incidents," State Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang said, while refusing to comment further.
