Sikkim: NH-10 hit by landslide, vehicle trapped at 20th Mile

Gangtok, Sep 17 (UNI) Incessant rain continued to disrupt road connectivity across Sikkim on Thursday, with landslides, mudslides, water accumulation and unstable road conditions reported at several locations, prompting authorities to issue safety advisories for motorists and travellers.
At 20th Mile in Bardang along NH-10, a car travelling from Singtam towards Rangpo reportedly got stuck on the landslide-affected stretch at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday as the road remained soft and cracked amid continued rainfall. The occupants were reported safe. An NHIDCL excavator was deployed and the vehicle was subsequently pulled out, while police personnel remained at the spot to assist with traffic movement and safety.
Authorities said the affected portion of NH-10 remains sensitive because of water accumulation and soft soil. Drivers have been advised to proceed slowly, maintain a safe distance from the damaged section, follow the instructions of police and road authorities and avoid stopping near the affected area while recovery and clearance operations are underway.
Meanwhile, the Singtam Road has been blocked at Aapdara and Marchak following heavy landslides, with travellers advised to exercise caution.
The Gyalshing district administration has also advised travellers heading to Yuksam to avoid the Darap-Rimbi-Yuksam road via 13th Mile and Kanchendzonga Falls, which has remained fully closed since September 14 following a landslide at Singlitam Ward under Rimbi-Timbrong Gram Panchayat. Work is under way to restore the route by constructing a Bailey Bridge, though adverse weather is hampering the operation.
Travellers have been advised to use the Legship-Tashiding-Gerethang-Yuksam road as an alternative until further orders.
Gangtok, too, reported minor mudslides at locations including High Court Road and TNA Road following heavy rainfall.
