Siliguri: Shankar Ghosh calls for expert study to address declining science enrolment in Bengal colleges

Siliguri, Oct 8 (UNI) West Bengal Tourism Minister and president of the governing body of Siliguri College, Dr Shankar Ghosh, on Thursday expressed concern over the declining number of students opting for science in colleges across the state and called for an expert-driven effort to identify the reasons behind the trend.
Speaking at the 77th Foundation Day programme of Siliguri College, Dr Ghosh said the Higher Education Department would seek suggestions from experienced heads of science departments on why students were not opting for science and how the situation could be addressed.
“Those who have more than 10-15 years of experience as heads of science departments should share their experiences. We need to find out why students are not taking admission, where the lapse is and how it can be resolved. We will compile the suggestions and send them to the Higher Education Department,” he said.
Dr Ghosh said he had already discussed the issue with Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay and suggested that a workshop could also be organised to examine the matter comprehensively.
“In some places, there are only five students against seven teachers. Why is this happening? We have to look at the issue in a comprehensive manner,” he said.
Dr Ghosh, who was himself a student of Siliguri College and is now its governing body president, said the institution should be developed as a model college under the University of North Bengal, with a clear vision for the next 10 years.
He stressed the role of teachers in motivating students and said the growing mindset that “what is the use of studying if there are no jobs” needed to be addressed.
He also called for greater involvement of the college’s alumni, including distinguished former students, in motivating present students. Successful alumni and eminent scientists could be invited to interact with students and deliver motivational lectures, he said.
Dr Ghosh also stressed the need to make the fourth year of undergraduate education more meaningful through research-oriented programmes and improved infrastructure.
He said a concerted effort was needed to improve academic standards and create an environment that would encourage students to remain connected with science and higher education.
