Sorry to BSF for the previous government’s ‘misdeeds’: West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, Nov 8 (UNI) Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday apologised to the Border Security Force (BSF) on behalf of the previous government in West Bengal, expressing regret over what he described as its inappropriate treatment of the border guarding force.
Addressing BSF personnel at a Kali Puja celebration organised by the force's 74 Battalion at Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas district, Adhikari said the state government would work towards rebuilding its relationship with the force.
Extending Diwali greetings to the personnel, the Chief Minister said, “On behalf of the West Bengal government and as the Chief Minister of the state, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you on Diwali. The previous government in the state behaved in a particular manner towards the BSF. As the Chief Minister of West Bengal, I apologise from the bottom of my heart for the misdeeds of the previous government.”
Adhikari also assured BSF personnel that the state government would explore employment opportunities for educated youths from border areas who were willing to work. Such opportunities, he said, would be made available through existing government schemes as well as projects to be introduced in the future.
The Chief Minister further announced that the state would introduce a new recognition initiative, 'Seema Mitra Samman', from next year to honour people associated with border areas.
Adhikari's visit to Hingalganj was primarily aimed at reviewing the security arrangements along the India-Bangladesh international border. His helicopter landed at the ground of Hingalganj College on Sunday. According to sources, he first held a meeting with senior BSF officers of the 74 Battalion, during which various aspects of border security and the challenges faced by personnel deployed in the area were discussed.
He was also scheduled to hold an administrative meeting with senior officers of the Basirhat police district after his interaction with the BSF.
The Hingalganj Border Outpost (BOP), located in the Sundarbans region of North 24 Parganas, occupies a strategically important position along the India-Bangladesh international border. The area, characterised by an intricate network of rivers, creeks and dense mangrove forests, presents considerable challenges for border surveillance.
The outpost functions under the BSF's 74th Battalion and falls within the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Sector Headquarters of the South Bengal Frontier. Its personnel play a crucial role in preventing infiltration, smuggling and other cross-border illegal activities in the difficult riverine terrain.
Given the geographical complexity of the Sundarbans, maintaining round-the-clock surveillance is a challenging task. To strengthen security along the waterways, the BSF has deployed modern floating Border Outposts (BOPs). These enable personnel to conduct regular river patrols and respond more effectively to suspicious movements along the international boundary.
Apart from its primary responsibility of guarding the border, the BSF has also undertaken several initiatives to develop closer ties with residents of border villages. Civic Action Programmes, bicycle rallies and other community-oriented activities are organised periodically to strengthen public engagement and cooperation.
The Hingalganj outpost has also hosted celebrations involving senior BSF officials. The Director General of the force had earlier joined personnel at the outpost to celebrate Holi.
Adhikari's visit and his apology to the BSF assume significance against the backdrop of the difficult relationship between the force and the previous state administration. His assurances on employment and the proposed Seema Mitra Samman also signal the new government's intention to strengthen coordination with the border guarding force and improve engagement with communities living along the international boundary.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also celebrated Kali Puja and Diwali with security personnel and police officers on duty at Kolkata airport on Sunday. He lit ceremonial lamps, distributed sweets and exchanged festive greetings with them, acknowledging their round-the-clock commitment to public safety and security. He wished everyone peace and prosperity. UNI RC NST
