West Bengal for aromatic Rose water-infused mist sprays to curb dust during festivals

Kolkata, Nov 8 (UNI) In an initiative aimed at curbing air pollution and improving the ambience at major festive venues, the West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs (UDMA) Department will introduce rose water-infused water mist sprays during Kali Puja and other special festivals and public events.
State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul announced the initiative while speaking to The Statesman on Saturday during a series of Kali Puja inaugurations in her Asansol South constituency.
The events included those at Burnpur Daily Market, Burnpur Mini Market, Gurunanakpally, Ismile Club and BPL Colony.
"This new initiative will simultaneously control airborne dust particles and spread a pleasant aroma throughout the festive venues," Paul said, adding that the government was taking several measures to improve air quality during the prolonged festive season.
Earlier in a Facebook post, the minister said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had been regularly deploying water mist sprayers in different parts of the city, particularly in areas recording relatively high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels.
The exercise is aimed at reducing dust particles in the air and helping keep pollution levels under control.
Paul also referred to her recent visit to London, where she found the AQI in several areas below 10 and, in some places, close to 1.
In contrast, she said, Kolkata's AQI remained above 200 for much of the year, posing a serious concern for public health.
"This situation is a matter of concern for everyone's health. We are therefore making continuous efforts within our capacity to ensure cleaner air for the city's residents," she said.
The minister said the proposed rose water-infused mist spraying would serve both environmental and aesthetic purposes, particularly at crowded festival venues during the winter months.
The moisture droplets are expected to help settle airborne dust particles, while the rose fragrance would make the surroundings more pleasant for devotees and visitors.
As part of its festive cleanliness and beautification drive, the KMC has also deployed special water-spraying machines to spray rose water around prominent locations in Kolkata.
These include the Maidan area, Victoria Memorial, Vijay Smarak, Eastern Command Maidan, Fort William, Kalisingh Ground and busy shopping districts.
Describing the objective as creating a "clean, clear and fragrant Kolkata", Paul urged residents to take collective responsibility for keeping the city clean and celebrating festivals safely.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Police has tightened enforcement measures to curb air and noise pollution during the festive season.
Only certified green crackers are permitted for sale, while bursting them has been restricted to designated two-hour windows during Kali Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja. UNI DC NST CDS
