Stay steadfast to ‘Never Give In’ motto, Naval chief to school students

Solan, Oct 5 (UNI) In a stirring address echoing the hallowed traditions of The Lawrence School, Sanawar - one of India’s oldest boarding institutions, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan today called upon students to anchor their lives in discipline, moral courage, and resolute purpose, urging them to stay steadfast to the school’s enduring motto: “Never Give In”.
Admiral Swaminathan was presiding as the chief guest at the grand finale of the three-day 179th Founder’s Day celebrations of The Lawrence School.
Drawing from his own formative journey entering a military boarding school at the age of 10, the Naval Chief spoke of how the crucible of residential schooling, dormitory life, playing fields, and mentorship, shapes character for a lifetime.
He exhorted the gathering to uphold unwavering integrity and cherish gratitude toward parents and teachers, while paying solemn homage to the supreme valour of legendary alumnus Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, Param Vir Chakra.
The ceremonial parade ground came alive with pageantry during the traditional Trooping of the School Colours, complemented by an immaculate march-past to the martial cadence of the school brass band. Alumni across jubilee batches spanning half a century 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1996, and 2001 stepped in unison alongside current cohorts, reinforcing the unbroken Sanawarian bond.
A centrepiece of the day was the presentation of the Distinguished Old Sanawarian Awards, celebrating alumni of exceptional public stature to Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and veteran diplomat. General Gaurav SJB Rana, former Chief of the Royal Nepalese Army and ex-Ambassador of Nepal to the Court of St James’s. Maja Daruwala, human rights jurist, who was conferred the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
The convocation also celebrated scholar-leaders of the current batch. Inaaya Kumar swept top honours, securing the Chief of Army Staff’s Trophy for Best Cadet, the King Constantine Medal for Round Square, the Som Dutt Trophy for Excellence, and the Honoria Lawrence Prize for Head Girl. Head Boy Ranraj Singh Choudhary was decorated with the Chief of Army Staff’s Trophy and the Henry Lawrence Prize.
In the academic roll of honour, Viraj Gupta claimed the Yashpal Chaudhary Gold Medal, the Late Capt. Zabar Singh Cash Award for overall first position in the Class XII Board Examination, and the Nellie Lovell Gold Medal for topping the Science stream. Lakshit Bansal and Davina Dhaliwal were felicitated as stream toppers in Commerce and Humanities, respectively. The sesquicentennial-plus legacy school, founded in 1847 by Sir Henry and Lady Honoria Lawrence, brought the curtains down on an action-packed weekend featuring the Annual Athletic Meet with nearly 700 competitors, cultural soirées, and vintage reunions set amidst the pine-crested heights of Kasauli Hills.
