Sugarcane growers warn of intensified stir

Belagavi, Oct 26 (UNI) Sugarcane growers on Monday demanded that the Karnataka government announce a decision to meet their demands, including a price of at least Rs 5,500 per tonne, warning of an intensified agitation if their demands were not addressed.
Farmer activist Chukki Nanjundaswamy, speaking ahead of a meeting with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here, said farmers had been protesting for several days, including blocking a national highway and taking out a march, prompting the government to convene the meeting.
The Chief Minister should announce a concrete decision on fulfilling the farmers' demands at the meeting, Nanjundaswamy said, insisting that sugarcane growers be paid at least Rs 5,500 per tonne.
He urged sugar factory owners to consider the hardships faced by farmers and cautioned that growers could explore alternatives to sugarcane if their concerns continued to be ignored.
Karnataka Sugarcane Growers' Association state president Kuruburu Shanthakumar also urged the state government to announce an immediate decision on remunerative prices for sugarcane.
He called on the Centre to increase the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) and the state government to raise the State Advised Price (SAP), arguing that both interventions were necessary to address farmers' concerns.
Shanthakumar said farmers' organisations had joined hands to press for an appropriate price and warned that failure to resolve the issue could trigger statewide protests, forcing sugarcane growers to take to the streets.
The leaders urged the government to use the meeting to resolve the price dispute, cautioning that continued inaction could intensify the agitation.
