Sugarcane price dispute sparks scuffle among farmer groups in Belagavi

Belagavi, Oct 26 (UNI) A meeting of sugarcane farmer leaders at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here on Monday descended into a scuffle over the demand for a higher price for sugarcane, with police intervening to restore order.
The confrontation reportedly broke out between supporters of farmer leaders Kodihalli Chandrashekhar and Chunappa Poojary over the demand for Rs 4,500 or Rs 5,500 per tonne, exposing differences within the farmers' movement at a time when growers are pressing the state government and sugar mills for a remunerative price.
The dispute allegedly intensified when Mahantesh Jamadar, associated with the Chandrashekhar faction, was speaking at the meeting. Members of the opposing group reportedly objected and took the microphone, questioning why Poojary was advocating a struggle for Rs 4,500 per tonne when farmers outside the meeting were demanding Rs 5,500.
Poojary maintained that the demand involved Rs 4,500 per tonne from sugar mills and a proposed Rs 1,000 per tonne incentive from the state government, taking the total to Rs 5,500. The difference in how the demand was being presented triggered heated exchanges that escalated into a physical confrontation.
The meeting had reportedly witnessed an earlier commotion over the alleged lack of drinking water and tea facilities. The situation remained tense as farmer leaders attempted to resolve the differences.
Reacting to the incident, Poojary alleged that some people had deliberately disrupted the meeting and expressed displeasure over the questions raised while he was speaking. He called for unity among farmers, saying internal divisions would weaken their collective struggle to secure their demands.
Farmer leader Shashikant Guruji urged Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take serious note of the incident and warned against any attempt to target Poojary. MLA Darshan Puttannaiah and farmer leader Chukki Nanjundaswamy were also reported to have intervened to calm the situation.
The clash came amid ongoing efforts by the state government to resolve the dispute over sugarcane prices through discussions with factory owners and farmer representatives. The confrontation underscored the challenge of maintaining unity among farmer groups as they press for a settlement on cane prices and the proposed government incentive.
