Surajkund Diwali Mela attracts 50,000 footfalls

Chandigarh, Oct 26 (UNI) union Minister Manohar Lal on Monday announced plans to expand the Surajkund Diwali Mela into a larger cultural and commercial attraction after nearly 50,000 people reportedly attended the festival, highlighting its potential to generate business for artisans and small traders.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the third Surajkund Diwali Mela, the Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs said the internationally recognised fair should host cultural and recreational activities apart from its annual handicrafts exhibition.
He proposed introducing light-and-sound shows, sporting activities, cultural performances and additional entertainment facilities to attract more visitors from Delhi, Gurugram, Palwal and surrounding areas.
"The Surajkund complex is known for its international handicrafts fair, but such a beautiful venue should not remain limited to activities for just a few days," Manohar Lal said.
The minister said approximately 50,000 visitors had attended the festival, where more than 300 stalls showcased handicrafts, traditional artwork and indigenous products from different parts of India.
He said expanding such events could provide artisans and small entrepreneurs with additional opportunities to reach customers while helping preserve traditional skills.
Manohar Lal also highlighted Haryana's governance record, recalling October 26, 2014, when he first assumed office as chief minister.
He described the state's merit-based recruitment system as a major administrative reform, claiming that government jobs were being awarded without political recommendations or payments.
The minister said the Family Identification Card system had also improved the identification of economically disadvantaged households and delivery of welfare benefits.
Haryana Heritage and Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma said the festival supported the national Vocal for Local initiative by promoting products made by Indian artisans.
"Purchasing local products during festivals encourages artisans, craftspeople and small traders and helps strengthen the country's economy," Sharma said.
He urged visitors to support indigenous products and traditional industries.
The festival featured cultural performances, regional handicrafts and traditional products, providing participating businesses with opportunities to reach consumers from across the National Capital Region.
Manohar Lal said future editions would seek to broaden public participation and make better use of the fair ground's infrastructure.
