21-year wait for regularisation: Haryana guest teachers put protest on hold after Vij's assurance

Kamlesh Kali
Ambala, Oct 26 (UNI) A 21-year struggle for permanent employment took a fresh turn on Monday as thousands of Haryana guest teachers suspended their march to Chandigarh following Cabinet Minister Anil Vij's intervention, securing a meeting at the Chief Minister's Office on November 2 to discuss their long-pending demand for regularisation.
The breakthrough came in Ambala Cantonment, where protesters under the banner of the Guest Teachers Joint Struggle Morcha were preparing to continue their Nyay Yatra towards Chandigarh.
Nearly 6,000 teachers from across the state were participating in the agitation, according to the organisers.
At the heart of the protest is the demand to regularise 10,757 guest teachers who, the Morcha says, have served Haryana's Education Department for nearly 21 years without securing permanent status.
The teachers want the state government to initiate regularisation under the three-year policy formulated in 2014 and implement the relevant court directions.
The march, which began from Kurukshetra on Sunday, encountered police barricades at Shahabad on Monday morning.
Morcha president Krishan Dharshool alleged that police prevented the protesters from proceeding despite assurances that they would march peacefully along the service lane without obstructing traffic.
Determined to avoid confrontation, the teachers used alternative routes and assembled near Mohra on National Highway 44 before resuming their journey towards Ambala.
However, the confrontation gave way to negotiations after Vij invited a delegation of teachers for discussions.
According to Dharshool, the minister examined their demands, sought information about court directions and facilitated a meeting at the Chief Minister's Office on November 2.
"The Cabinet Minister has assured us that he will strongly take up our case with the government and get the court's directions implemented," Dharshool said.
The Morcha subsequently announced the suspension of its march but made it clear that the decision was conditional on progress towards resolving the teachers' demands.
"If the issue is not resolved, we will be forced to resume the yatra from Ambala Cantonment," Dharshool warned.
While the minister's intervention has temporarily defused the agitation, the central demand for regularisation remains unresolved.
The November 2 meeting will be the next crucial stage in the teachers' efforts to secure a decision from the state government.
