Suvendu urges Adani Group to help rebuild Bengal as 2000-bed hospital gets foundation stone

Kolkata, Sep 24 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari urged the Adani Group to make further investments in the state, saying the conglomerate could play a key role in rebuilding Bengal as he laid the foundation stone for a 2,000-bed hospital for the poor at New Town.
“The Adani Arogya Mandir will be developed on 51.75 acres and will provide 1,000 beds free of cost to economically disadvantaged patients”, Adhikari said during the Bhoomi Pujan on Thursday.
He described the project as a milestone for the state and said the hospital would become the centre of a healthcare city in New Town.
“This is a historic day for Bengal. There is no such arrangement anywhere in the country for the poor,” Adhikari said.
The chief minister said the hospital project had moved quickly after his government assumed office.
“After I took charge as chief minister, Karan Adani met me. He said he wanted to build a modern hospital in New Town. I agreed. With Gautam Adani’s green signal, the foundation stone has been laid within a few months,” he said.
Adhikari said half of the hospital’s beds would be reserved for poor patients and provided entirely free of charge.
“The hospital will have 1,000 beds for the poor, absolutely free. This is a big thing. It does not exist anywhere else in India. Such high-standard hospitals do not provide treatment to the poor free of cost. Therefore, today is a historic day for Bengal. This is a milestone,” he said.
“The project will also lead to the development of supporting infrastructure around the hospital and increase government revenue. New Town will develop as a healthcare city,” he said.
Adhikari also appealed to the Adani Group to expand its investment footprint in Bengal.
“West Bengal has everything. I would like to request Gautam Adani to help our government. Please come and help us make Bengal stand on its feet again,” he added.
Taking a swipe at previous governments, Adhikari alleged that industrial development had suffered under both the Left Front and the Trinamul Congress.
“Bengal has suffered a lot. During the Left regime, 54 factories were shut down because of union-related problems. In the last 15 years, the Trinamul government was not interested in industry. They only gave allowances and did politics,” he said.
Referring to the proposed deep-sea port, Adhikari said the Adani Group would develop the facility at Dadanpatrabarh, while an RFP (Request for Proposal) would be prepared for the project.
He also said his government had plans for a greenfield airport at Kalyani, claiming that an earlier proposal for another international-standard airport had been rejected by the previous government.
The remarks came on the same day that Gautam Adani announced plans to invest more than Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035 across ports, logistics, power, roads, bridges, cement and hyperscale data centres.
