Tata Sons Board reappoints N Chandrasekaran as chairman for another 5 years

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) N Chandrasekaran will continue as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons after the company's board on Thursday voted to reappoint him for another five-year term, reversing his earlier decision to step down when his current tenure ends next year.
Chandrasekaran's existing term as Executive Chairman is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027. The development comes just over a month after he informed the Tata Sons board that he would not seek another term.
According to Tata Sons, the board had initially agreed in principle in September 2025 to reappoint Chandrasekaran for another five years. However, when the formal resolution was taken up in February 2026, the board deferred the matter after failing to reach unanimity.
The issue was subsequently discussed at board meetings held in May and June, but no final decision was reached. Against this backdrop, Chandrasekaran decided on August 12 not to offer himself for reappointment after his existing term expired.
The situation changed in September. On September 3, the Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) of Tata Sons met to consider Chandrasekaran's decision and deliberate on his possible continuation as chairman.
After its discussions, the NRC unanimously asked Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision. It also recommended that the board reappoint him, citing his contribution to the Tata Group and what it described as the larger interests of the group.
The Tata Sons board met on September 17, its first meeting since Chandrasekaran's decision to step down became public. At the meeting, Chandrasekaran agreed to reconsider his decision following the board's request.
The board subsequently voted in favour of his reappointment. Tata Sons said the resolution was approved by a majority, paving the way for Chandrasekaran to serve another five-year term after the completion of his current tenure.
The latest decision, however, will also involve regulatory compliance. Tata Sons said its board has decided to initiate the necessary steps under applicable Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.
The company will also seek guidance from the RBI, Tata Trusts and other relevant stakeholders regarding the compliance requirements linked to Chandrasekaran's reappointment.
Chandrasekaran took charge as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 and has been at the helm of the holding company overseeing the Tata Group's diverse businesses. His continuation comes as the group navigates regulatory, governance and strategic matters across its companies.
The formal process for his next five-year tenure will now proceed subject to the applicable regulatory and stakeholder requirements.UNI VK AAB
