TAVR procedure gives new lease of life to 71-year-old woman in Odisha with severe heart disease

Bhubaneswar, Sep 28 (UNI) Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here have successfully performed a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) on a 71-year-old woman suffering from acute decompensated heart failure, offering a minimally invasive treatment option for patients at high risk from open-heart surgery.
The patient, Pramila Maharana of Kendrapada district, had been admitted to the hospital about three weeks ago in a critical condition. She was diagnosed with very severe aortic stenosis, with her heart functioning at only around 20 to 30 per cent of its capacity and her blood pressure remaining very low, Head of the Department of Cardiology Prof. (Dr.) Suresh Kumar Behera said on Monday.
Considering her critical condition and the risks associated with conventional open-heart surgery, the medical team, after discussions with her family members, decided to perform a Percutaneous Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, Dr. Behera said at a press conference organised ahead of World Heart Day.
World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29, with this year's theme, ‘Don't Miss a Beat’, seeking to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and highlight often-overlooked symptoms of heart-related ailments.
Explaining the procedure, Dr. Gyana Ranjan Nayak, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiology, said the replacement valve was implanted through the femoral artery without making an incision in the chest.
“This is an innovative procedure in which a new heart valve is placed through the femoral artery without any incision on the chest,” he said.
Dr. Nayak said the patient's recovery was rapid, as she was able to move around within two to three days of the procedure and was subsequently discharged from the hospital.
He said TAVR requires meticulous planning, including a detailed pre-operative CT scan, to assess the patient's anatomy and determine the appropriate valve and approach.
According to the doctors, the minimally invasive procedure carries fewer risks than conventional open-heart surgery in appropriately selected patients and can facilitate faster recovery and improved quality of life.
Prof. Behera said TAVR could be particularly useful for elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities and for those who are considered high-risk candidates for open-heart surgery or prefer to avoid conventional surgery.
The successful procedure at SUM Hospital highlights the growing role of minimally invasive cardiac interventions in treating patients with severe valvular heart disease, particularly those for whom conventional surgery may pose significant risks.
