Tejasvi Surya slams Rahul Gandhi over kurta-pulling incident

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Tuesday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over a video showing him pulling Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar by his kurta during an Opposition march in New Delhi, accusing the Congress leadership of displaying a sense of entitlement rooted in dynastic politics.
In a post on X, Surya drew a parallel between the incident and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s announcement of Veerendra Patil’s removal as Karnataka Chief Minister at an airport.
“If arrogance of inherited privilege, passed down generations, had a face, it would look like this,” Surya said, alleging that the Congress dynasty’s sense of entitlement remained unchanged.
“Politics aside, D K Shivakumar represents Karnataka. Such public humiliation is an insult to the dignity of seven crore Kannadigas,” he said.
Surya also questioned Rahul Gandhi’s authority over Karnataka’s elected leadership, pointing out that the Congress leader held no executive office or constitutional authority in the state government.
Visuals of the incident have drawn attention to different camera angles. While the front-angle footage appears to show Rahul Gandhi pulling Shivakumar by the collar, the top-view footage appears to show him pulling the Deputy Chief Minister's kurta.
The incident occurred during an Opposition march to the Supreme Court against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Election Commission’s actions.
The footage triggered criticism from BJP leaders, who accused Gandhi of disrespecting a senior Congress leader and an elected representative from Karnataka. Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra also questioned the treatment meted out to Shivakumar by the Congress leadership.
The controversy has added a fresh political dimension to the Opposition’s protest, with the BJP focusing attention on the Congress leadership’s treatment of its own senior leaders.
