Telangana: EC turned into BJP affiliate, alleges Ponnam Prabhakar

Karimnagar, Oct 6 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is expected to uphold democratic values, was functioning like an affiliate of the BJP and that the names of eligible poor voters were being deleted from electoral rolls.
Speaking to the media at Nakirikommula village in Koheda mandal of Karimnagar district on Tuesday, Prabhakar alleged that electoral roll revisions were earlier undertaken with the objective of ensuring that no eligible voter was left out, whereas the present process was resulting in the deletion of votes of poor and marginalised sections.
He demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that he was acting like a spokesperson for a political party.
Prabhakar alleged that similar attempts to influence electoral outcomes had taken place in states including Karnataka, Bihar and West Bengal. His concerns come amid the ongoing political debate in Telangana over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Prabhakar said the Congress and other democratic parties had a responsibility to protect the constitutional right to vote, particularly the voting rights of poor and marginalised sections.
He said a ‘Vote Bachao–Desh Bachao’ (Save Vote–Save Nation) campaign would be intensified across Telangana from the village level.
He called upon civil society organisations and political parties to unite to safeguard constitutional rights and warned that the agitation would be intensified if the Election Commission did not change its approach.
He also criticised the Centre over what he described as a dictatorial approach, alleging that people's voices were being ignored while only the government's views were being projected through programmes such as Mann Ki Baat.
