Telangana: Press freedom has weakened, says Chinta Mohan

Hyderabad, Sep 21 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former union Minister Chinta Mohan on Monday expressed concern over what he described as a decline in press freedom in the country and alleged that corporate ownership had weakened media independence.
Addressing the media at the Press Club in Somajiguda here, Mr Chinta Mohan said a free press is essential for a healthy democracy and described it as one of the important pillars of the democratic system.
He alleged that press freedom had declined considerably compared to the situation two decades ago. Corporate entities had acquired significant control over the media, resulting in journalists having less freedom to express their views, he alleged.
Recalling the period when P V Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister, Mr Chinta Mohan said the media used to openly criticise governments and political leaders. He alleged that journalists were now hesitant to write critically about political parties and leaders.
He said the weakening of press freedom posed a danger to democracy and expressed the hope that the media would regain greater freedom and independence.
