Chennai, May 20 (UNI) Three people died in a wall collapse due to heavy rains at
Valayankulam village near Tiruparankundram in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu late
last night due to heavy rains.
Police source said since there was power cut due to the showers, the victims were
sitting outside their house and were chatting when the tragedy occurred.
The deceased were identified as Amma Pillai, his neighbour Venkati Ammal and
Amma Pillai's ten-year-old grand son Veeramani.
While they were chatting, one portion of the wall in Amma Pillai's house, which
was drenched, collapsed and fell on them, killing Venkatesh on the spot.
The other two were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital where they died
on Tuesday.
Police are investigating.
It may be noted that severl parts of the state had been experiencing heavy rains
for the last two daus due to the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulationover
the bay, bringing the much needed respite from the searing heat.
The met office has predicted hevy falls in more than 10 districts for the day, mostly
in the Western Ghats and its neighbouring districts, besides in some parts of the
Northern districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur
and in North Interior districts.
