TIPRA Motha founder met CM and CS 3 weeks after announcement of his exit from politics

Agartala, Oct 29 (UNI) After returning from Delhi, TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman met Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday night. He also held a separate meeting with Chief Secretary J K Sinha over assurances that the 2024 Tiprasa (tribal) Accord would be implemented within a fixed timeline.
Amid preparations for the urban local body elections, Pradyot’s meeting with the Chief Minister is seen as significant. TIPRA Motha, a partner in the BJP-led Tripura government, has announced that it would sever electoral ties with the BJP unless the accord is implemented and tribal land rights are secured.
Only three weeks ago, Pradyot announced his intention to step back from active politics. He said his political involvement was driven not by personal ambition but by repeated denials of dignity and rights to tribal people. His apparent return just ahead of the election announcement, however, has raised questions about his credibility.
After the meetings, Pradyot described the discussions as constructive. The accord aims to protect Tiprasa rights, and he expressed hope that its implementation would move forward in the coming months. He told the media that the discussions had been positive and that he had been assured of implementation in a time-bound manner.
The meeting covered issues raised in the accord, but Debbarman declined to share details, saying the Chief Minister should also speak publicly. He maintained that, despite stepping away from politics, he continued to speak for the people of Tripura rather than for his party.
Asked about the Chief Minister’s earlier statement on talks with the Centre, Debbarman said a formal notice was expected within a few days. Implementation has remained a key demand of TIPRA Motha since the accord was signed in 2024. Ahead of the village committee elections, he said he had received assurances that talks on implementation would move forward within a month.
Debbarman expressed hope that the process would address the concerns of those who feel deprived of their rights without harming any community. He said Tripura was set to enter a period of development and that Bengalis and Tiprasa should live peacefully, with a secure future for children from both communities.
He stressed that Wednesday’s meeting did not involve political negotiations or seat-sharing for the upcoming urban local body elections. He said he had come to discuss the rights of Tiprasa people and the wider public, engaging with Saha in his capacity as Chief Minister rather than negotiating with the BJP.
Debbarman planned to return to Delhi today for medical treatment but did not disclose details of any meetings there. At the time this report was filed, neither the Chief Minister nor the state government had released a detailed account of the discussions.
