Tirupati: SVIMS successfully treats two children with Wilms tumour

Tirupati, Sep 21 (UNI) Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, has successfully treated two two-year-old children diagnosed with Wilms tumour, providing comprehensive cancer care through a multidisciplinary approach, SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor Dr Gudaru Jagadesh said on Monday.
In the recent case, a two-year-old girl from Rayachoti in Annamayya district was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour involving the right kidney after she was brought to SVIMS with an abdominal mass, Dr Jagadesh said in a release here.
She underwent four cycles of chemotherapy under the Medical Oncology team led by Dr Bhargavi, completed on August 21.
Following the chemotherapy, the child underwent a right radical nephrectomy on September 15, performed by the Surgical Oncology Unit-II team led by Prof Dr B Manilal. She made a satisfactory recovery and was discharged on September 21, he said.
In another case, a two-year-old boy from Puttur Mandal in Tirupati district, also diagnosed with Wilms tumour, underwent chemotherapy followed by surgery at SVIMS.
He has recovered well and attended the Surgical Oncology OP Department for follow-up on September 21.
Dr Jagadesh said the cases demonstrated the importance of coordinated cancer care involving Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology.
He said SVIMS was committed to ensuring that advanced cancer treatment was accessible to poor and economically disadvantaged patients through Government health schemes and humanitarian initiatives of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
The treatment provided to the two-year-old girl, including chemotherapy, surgery and other necessary medical services, was completely free of cost under the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva scheme, he said.
Dr Jagadesh also said steps were being taken to strengthen cancer services through the upcoming 'SVIMS Advanced Cancer Care Centre', which will integrate cancer diagnostics, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and allied specialised services.
He stressed the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, multidisciplinary decision-making and regular follow-up, and urged parents to seek medical evaluation if children develop unusual abdominal swelling, a palpable mass, unexplained loss of appetite or weight, or persistent weakness.
