Tom Cruise seriously considering a standalone film on 'Tropic Thunder' character Les Grossman

Los Angeles, May 27 (UNI) Fans of actor-director Ben Stiller's comedy classic 'Tropic Thunder' could be in for a cinematic treat, as director Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that Tom Cruise is seriously contemplating a standalone film based on his highly memorable and well received character, Les Grossman.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, McQuarrie, currently helming Cruise in 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning', confirmed that "very serious conversations" have taken place.
"The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so f***ing funny," McQuarrie stated, noting that the focus is on "how best to do it" and delving into "what that character is" at its core, according to Variety.
Indeed, the 'Top Gun: Maverick' star has himself also expressed his openness to the idea of doing a movie based on Grossman many times.
Les Grossman, a character born from prosthetic makeup and an unhinged persona, became an instant fan-favourite following his scene-stealing appearance in Ben Stiller's 2008 satirical action-comedy 'Tropic Thunder'.
With his monstrous hands, balding pate, and volcanic temper, Grossman quickly became one of Cruise's most unexpectedly acclaimed performances.
The director shared that these discussions about a potential Grossman film provided a crucial creative outlet during the intense production of 'The Final Reckoning'.
"We don’t even think about the structure, we play with scenes," McQuarrie explained. "Just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we’re making for a minute, is such decompression. And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present."
The pair's latest collaboration, the eighth 'Mission: Impossible' instalment, has already shown considerable promise, reportedly contributing to the biggest Memorial Day box office numbers of all time.
The film grossed a series-best $63 million over the weekend and an estimated $77 million through the four-day holiday frame, suggesting any future projects from the duo could find significant success.
