UoH researchers develop new metal alloys for safer, longer-lasting medical implants

Hyderabad, Nov 3 (UNI) Researchers from the University of Hyderabad (UoH), in collaboration with scientists from IIT Delhi, IIT Bhubaneswar and CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, have developed a new family of metal alloys that could improve the strength, safety and durability of medical implants such as hip joints and bone plates.
The research findings, published in the international peer-reviewed journal Advanced Healthcare Materials by Wiley, offer a promising alternative to conventional implant materials, which can wear down, corrode and release metal ions into surrounding tissues over time.
The research team developed titanium-cobalt-chromium (TiCoCr)-based multi-principal element alloys by combining the three metals in equal or near-equal proportions. Laboratory tests showed that the new alloys possess high strength, excellent wear and corrosion resistance, and flexibility closer to that of natural bone, potentially reducing the risk of implants loosening.
